The Afro House Genre: Can It Be Fully Accepted By Nigerians?

House Music…. a not-so-popular genre of music with Nigerian folks but certainly one that has the absolute power to keep you nodding your head vigorously {if you can’t dance at that moment} and fixing it on replay. It is generally a
dance-based music genre characterized by 4/4 beats {DJs and Producers should understand this}. However, if you want to identify house music, just listen closely,,, it has more instrumentals than lyrics sung itself. They have beat
peaks and little lyrics with beats coming in again. Can’t seem to think of a track like that? Then how about the popular Beat Of Life {Samba} by Sarz ft Wizkid, the club banger and got massive airplay on radios around Nigeria during late 2012 and early 2013. Also performed by Wizkid alongside Chris Brown in the South Africa X Tour. Noticed the song was different from most Nigerian tracks you are used to? Yeah, that’s Afro House for you. At least the track was, until Wizkid did Song Of Life {Samba} which was more of the dancehall genre but Nigerians totally preferred the original version.

Other Afro House tracks have been produced but most have not received the wide acceptance from Nigerians like those unique beats from Sarz. Other Afro House tracks include but are not limited to Excuse me by DJ Spinall ft Timaya, Zenze Remix By Uhuru, the most recent afro house club banger in Nigeria, Ora by Terry G, Khona by Mafikizolo and Uhuru, Lento by Professor, Turn Down For What by Masterkraft ft Phyno, DJ Vetkuk Ovia Orlando {the beats used in Elegushi Spenders}, Eran by Base One, Ibadi By Niniola {she probably won’t agree with me}, Tsa Mandebele Kids by Oskido’s Candy, Soke by Niniola {well, again, we see her on this list. Doesn’t really speak well of a Project Fame Finalist. Your fans are supposed to be captivated by your voice not the instrumentals of a track. The thing is she has one of the most beautiful voices i have heard used in Soke at point 02:38 minutes. It quite sounded heavenly.}, Lento by Professor {the beats Terry G used in See Groove}.

I’ll have to be considerate here and mention some foreign house music tracks for the Mchubites that don’t follow Nigerian music. Tracks like Hey Mama by David Guetta Ft Nicki Minaj and Afro jack, Levels By Avicii, Firestones by Kygo ft Conrad, Summer by Calvin Harris, Lay Me Down produced by Avicii, Hey Brother producer by Avicii, Calvin Harris Ft Ellie Goulding Outside and so many more. This genre of music has been popularized and is accepted by South Africans. On some websites, there are even categories for downloading South African House Music. On the other hand, the opinions of Nigerians vary on this genre.

Over to you guys. Do you feel Afro House music can be widely accepted by Nigerians and your opinions on the various tracks from unique genre you have heard.
